rapt in felt exhibition

Each year Canberra Region Feltmakers holds an exhibition and bazaar to showcase and sell work made by members over the previous year. The handmade felt pieces on exhibition are unique and typically use a range of fibres including wool, silk and alpaca – as well as woven fabrics. This colourful event is popular, with a host of regular visitors as well as many new faces each year.

The 2011 ‘Rapt in Felt’ exhibition opens on the evening of Wednesday 25 May 2011, at the CSIRO Discovery Centre in Acton ACT. In 2011, fashion parades will be held on the Saturday and Sunday. The 2011 exhibition runs from 26 – 29 May 2011.

My love of felt began when my mother introduced me to the form when I was a teenager. My enthusiasm grew when I met artist and feltworker Anita Larkin. Anita travelled widely to discover as much as she could about felt, she went so far as to study in Hungary and Turkey! She has been artist in residence at Wollongong City Gallery and is represented by Defiance art gallery in Sydney. Anita’s work in felt has been greatly varied, from simple usable objects, Nuno felt, large sculptural works and wearable art. Her work has always been inspirational in its perfection and detail, something I could never quite master! I tried to learn as much from her as I could, but there is so much to discover about felting and all its uses, processes and potential, I feel as if I never even got close to learning enough!
Anita is a part of The Illawarra Feltmakers Inc. a group on the South Coast of Australia. If you are in that area and have any interest in fibre art or felting, I would strongly advise a visit to a meeting!

Go here for a great wool dyeing tutorial, dyeing is simple enough to do at home with every day items for tools e.g.
# Wool
# Stock Pot
# Plastic Container
# Water
# White Vinegar
# Dye
# Potato Masher
# Strainer
# Kitchen Stove
# A place for the wool to drip dry
For those who are after a more in depth look at the process, this is a really great bit of information for those interested in dyeing.
You do need a degree in chemistry to be able to understand huge swathes of it, but there is so much of it there that everyone is bound to find something useful!

Kids Fun Felt

This is not really the best example of good felting but the end product is pretty cute and it is fun for kids! The tutorial is a long one and takes a while to load, but it is worth it if you are after something simple.

Beautiful Felt Art

There are some amazing felt artists in the world and many of them are Australian. Felt making has been around for hundreds of years, but in Australia, felting is a newer art form. There are many fabulous sites up and running and many of them are group or community sites. These sites are great for finding local classes, artists, groups, exhibits and galleries. The Victorian Feltmakers Inc are an Australian community group who do just that, have a look at their website to find more info about how to join up!

There are also great online lessons and tutorials, although nothing compares to getting together with a great teacher and learning new techniques, styles and handy hints!

Teresa Glover is an Australian artists who has done some beautiful Felt Art. Her website has a beautiful gallery with work for sale, but it is great just to have a look at, this work is well worth the time!
